Monolithic vs Microservices Architecture
In a monolithic architecture, all software modules—user authentication, payment processing, product catalogs, and notification engines—are packaged into a single codebase and deployed as one unit. While simple to build initially, monoliths become brittle as organizations grow: a bug in one module can bring down the entire system, and scaling requires duplicating the entire application.
Microservices architecture breaks the application into small, independent services. Each service runs in its own process, manages its own private database, and communicates via lightweight network protocols like HTTP REST, gRPC, or asynchronous message brokers (RabbitMQ/Apache Kafka).
Key Components of a Microservices System
- API Gateway: Acts as the single entry point for client applications. It handles SSL termination, user authentication, rate limiting, and routes requests to downstream microservices.
- Service Discovery: Maintains a dynamic registry of live service instances and their IP addresses, enabling load balancing across auto-scaled replicas.
- Circuit Breakers: Prevents cascading failures. If a downstream service (like a fraud detection API) becomes unresponsive, the circuit opens and returns a graceful fallback immediately instead of tying up server threads.
Practical Example: Express API Gateway Routing
import express from 'express';
import { createProxyMiddleware } from 'http-proxy-middleware';
const app = express();
// Route traffic to Auth Microservice
app.use('/api/auth', createProxyMiddleware({
target: 'http://auth-service:4001',
changeOrigin: true
}));
// Route traffic to Orders Microservice
app.use('/api/orders', createProxyMiddleware({
target: 'http://orders-service:4002',
changeOrigin: true
}));
app.listen(8000, () => console.log('API Gateway running on port 8000'));
Conclusion
Microservices offer organizational velocity and isolated fault domains, but introduce distributed system complexities like network latency and data consistency challenges. Adopting Docker containerization and clear API boundaries ensures a smooth transition to distributed architecture.
